Steelcase worked with the engineering school at Texas A&M University to find a solution to a common education dilemma—how to integrate technology in an active learning environment. The result is the Verb Active Media Table.

Equipped with a 32-inch monitor on an automatic lift, Verb Active Media Table makes it easy for instructors to provide multimedia instruction in a way that’s visible for all students. This seemingly simple idea is actually quite revolutionary, as it takes the focus off the front of the classroom and puts it on the students themselves, making them active participants in their own learning.

The Verb Active Media Table includes a pendant to raise and lower the monitor, an integrated wire management system, and an analog whiteboard with its own storage compartment. This complements the electronic monitor and lets students and teachers alike demonstrate concepts at student desks—an addition that may prove particularly useful in design and architecture classrooms.

A suite of flexible seating and tables for public spaces, the Slide Collection by Cumberland lends itself well to hospitality settings.

Designed by David Mocarski, Slide includes Current seating and tables, featuring light metal bases and a slim profile. Current Lounge incorporates a swooping seat, which the designer calls “wings,” that allows users to sit in various positions, including cross-legged.

Current Bench is a minimalist wonder in sleek oval form. Other Slide pieces include the chunky, monolithic Dock Lounge and Dock Ottoman, which add “visual dimension” to the collection, serving to anchor the lighter pieces.

3rings : Tinge by Mo Man Tai

Before becoming a designer, Ulrike Jurklies, owner and lead designer of Dutch label Mo Man Tai was a carpenter, so it should come as no surprise that she tapped into her carpentry roots to create Tinge, a series of plastic side tables.

For Tinge, Jurklies was inspired by the leftover plastic materials generated when a color process machine receives a new color of dye. Rather than discard this unused material, she came up with an innovative way to use it when designing a range of transparent furniture.

Much like an oversize puzzle, each table comes as a series of slotted pieces that can be installed together without the need for tools or additional hardware. Currently the transparent pieces are available in lavender and white, but Jurklies anticipates adding additional colors in the future.

A playful light with a good dose of joie de vivre, Perch Light Branch by Umut Yamac for Moooi replicates a common backyard picture in sparkling brass and translucent white.

“What is more poetic and elegantly captivating than a bird perched on a branch, flirting, singing and celebrating life?” Moooi asks. Not much is our answer.

Made of steel, aluminum, and PP (the fancy name for polypropylene), Perch Light Branch contains an LED light source inside each geometric bird, which looks like glowing origami.

The cable length and suspension poles of Perch Light Bird can be adjusted, so the suspension lamp works with high and low ceilings in spaces large and small.

Yamac has also designed a table, floor, and wall version of the lamp, and a sculptural Perch Light Tree is coming soon—complete with a large flock.
